Osteography: background and context
I am a contemporary artist based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, UK.
In 2007 I won the Eyestorm Gallery Award for Contemporary painting and in 2008 I received Arts Council funding for research and development of a major new series of drawings which I have titled Origin 09. Elements of this project have included Leviathan: a life-sized drawing of a sperm whale displayed at X-church Lincolnshire and Orbit a drawing from a photograph of my retina. Much of this body of work has been developed in collaboration with the poet Chris Jones. Examples of these drawings can be viewed at www.origin09.org.
The concept for Osteography, which follows on from this body of work, has been developed from a dialogue between Dr Jacqui Mulville a Cardiff based zooarchaeologist (and specialist in animal bones) and myself. The project aims to reflect a mutual interest in the creative possibilities of exploring animal form and function through skeletal structure.
